• While Chinese globe shoppers remain the number one nationality by share of global spend for Tax Free Shopping (TFS), Americans (who are fifth largest) are registering bigger sales growth with +36% this month, and have overtaken the Chinese who have dropped to just +11% sales increase in January year-on-year (YoY).

• Global Blue’s Asia TFS destinations are showing strong sales growth this month with a +37% sales spike for the region. This is being driven by a rise in the number of Chinese globe shoppers in Japan and Indonesians in Singapore, respectively.

• The UK has edged above France to take the number one TFS destination this month, in terms of share of global spend. Sales, however, are down -11% in the UK for January YoY, reflecting the problematic strength of the British pound. Middle East nationalities now have a greater share of spend here than the Chinese.

• Italy is the third biggest TFS destination globally this month and, with +7% increase in sales for January YoY, it is the only European country in the top five to show positive growth.

• Japan is now Global Blue’s fourth largest TFS destination, where we have doubled our merchant footprint over the last 12 months and sales are up +42% for January YoY.
